After His Death
His brother went to the Punch Bowl Cemetery three times in order to confirm John’s death in 1982. At the time of his death, his mother was living in Hartford, Connecticut. His brother was also sent a letter, but he was attending college at Mississippi State University. 12
Before he died, his mother was very preoccupied with finding his foot locker, or his belongings. One year after his death, his mother was still in hot pursuit of her son’s belongings. She sent a series of letters asking for his trunk(baggage), but the military could not find it. His room was searched, but no sign of the trunk could be found. She sent them a letter explaining the trunk’s contents
“it’s a foot locker and only contents I can name is an electric razor, a Ronson cigarette case, and lighter with the initials J.F.M. engraved on it and officer uniforms… The trunk was to be shipped to E.L. Griffith, State College, Mississippi.”
She was distraught over the men not being able to find her son’s trunk. However, it could not be found, and she was paid $347.01 for the loss of the trunk and its contents. She did find a bedroll and a portable bucket later, on July 17.
